Sundays - January 4-February 8 - 3:00-5:00pm

Ages: 14+

Prerequisites: Sewing 1, Sewing 2 AND one additional class (How to Read a Pattern, Boxy Top, Skirt with Pockets, or equivalent), or the Six week sewing series.

Description: This series is for the advanced beginner sewist who is able to use a machine and sew independently. If you are ready to expand your sewing practice, this series is for you! We will focus on constructing a project from cutting to sewing by way of following a commercial sewing pattern. In this class you will select a project (sewing pattern), gather fabric & supplies, and be guided through the steps from start to finish. Most sewing projects require more than a couple of hours to finish, which makes this series perfect for chipping away at a project and learning essential techniques along the way. Each student will be able to pick out their choice of project from available options provided by Remainders. No upcycles please. This class focuses on learning sewing techniques by way of reading and following a pattern. The goal of the series is to learn more advanced sewing techniques and practice comprehension of technical instructions included in sewing patterns. Students can expect to finish one garment and if time allows, move on to a second pattern. Weekly targets include…

Week 1: Begin by selecting a project (sewing pattern) and appropriate fabric. Examples of project options could include: pajama pants for beginners, a skirt or pants with darts or pleats, a simple dress, or a button up shirt. Students will practice selecting their size and determining how much fabric is required. Students can learn how to transfer the pattern to paper as well as techniques to lay out fabric and cut the pattern pieces.

Week 2: Finish cutting pattern pieces out of fabric. Then, begin following sewing instructions with the help of a teacher.

Week 3-4: Continue following sewing instructions and learn new techniques along the way; for example, applying interfacing, clipping corners, sewing in elastic, button holes, zippers, etc. These skills will be taught based on each student's choice of project.

Week 5-6: Continued practice of not just cutting and sewing, but also following the “technical instructions,” included in the commercial sewing pattern. By practicing reading the sewing instructions, students will gradually be able to learn and practice many new skills on their own. Students may be on to their second project by now.

Optional prerequisite: Beginning Serger class, if you want to use the serger.

Note: If you already have an advanced beginner pattern that you would like to bring in, please email the instructors to make sure it fits with the target skills of the series. You are also welcome to bring your own fabric and supplies suitable to your pattern. We will provide a selection of fabric from Remainders for those who do not wish to bring their own fabric.

Instructors: Amanda Edwards has taught middle/ elementary school for over 12 years and discovered garment sewing in 2018 by making a simple woven top and was immediately hooked. Since then, she has learned many more sewing techniques & skills while working toward a goal of crafting a completely handmade wardrobe. Sewing has helped her find more joy and acceptance of her body, cultivate a sense of environmental stewardship, and develop mindful clothing practices. She hopes to share this feeling of confidence and empowerment with others on their sewing journey. Her approach toward garment sewing is mindful, sustainable, and inclusive of all sized bodies. Megan Bright has been sewing as a result of her grandmother’s inspiration, since 2004. She studied apparel design at university and moved to California in 2017 to pursue work in costume design. Currently, she enjoys teaching, sewing with friends, and working as an alterations specialist for red-carpet events.
