Sat 4/19 Cultura Popular: Samba de Roda 1pm

Description: Samba de roda is a rich cultural ritual that comes from Afro-Brazilian communities, combining song, dance, and percussion. In this class we will explore hand percussion, dance (partner and solo), the cultural context and history of samba, and call-and-response songs. Come ready to move your body, and at the end of class we will have time for Q&A. No experience necessary!
Materials included: All materials will be provided, though if you are a dancer and have a circle skirt, please bring it. If you are a musician and have a conga, pandeiro, or djembe, bring it.
Instructor: Arthur Fiu is a world-renowned capoeirista and musician. He has been studying capoeira and Afro-Brazilian art forms (cultural popular) since childhood. He began teaching capoeira in 2007, and deepened his study of samba de roda over the past ten years. He has traveled the world giving workshops, classes and lectures. He now presides over the capoeira and music classes held in Room 7 at Remainders.
Location: Room 7 - the studio at the back of the building. Entrance is down the driveway and to the left, facing the parking lot.
