Tue 8/11-9/15 6-week Fashion School 6pm
Tuesday - August 11-September 15 - 6:00-8:00pm
Ages: 16+
Prerequisite: Must know how to use a sewing machine, or have taken Beginner Sewing 1.
Description: 6-Week Fashion School is a hands-on introduction to fashion design, sewing, and garment construction for aspiring designers and makers. The series guides students through essential skills including fabric identification, hand and machine sewing, pattern reading, garment construction, alterations, and finishing techniques. Participants complete practical projects while developing the confidence and foundational skills needed to create, repair, and customize clothing. The program emphasizes creativity, sustainability, and quality craftsmanship in a supportive studio environment.
Week 1: Garment Construction: Learn about the fundamentals of garment construction and how elements like gathering and contouring are combined to create designs and how they are properly sewn.
Week 2: Fabrics: Learn the fundamentals of fabrics. How they are categorized, how they are produced, and their correct application in various garments.
Week 3: Fitting and Draping: Learn about how a garment should properly fit and drape over the body, along with what to change to make an ill-fitting garment fit during the sewing process.
Week 4: Drawing Garments: Learn the basics of garment illustration and how to conceptualize and render a design.
Week 5: Sewing Project Part 1: Begin a project from a pattern approved in week 4. This class will cover cutting and the beginning of sewing the garment.
Week 6: Sewing Project Part 2: Continue and ideally finish the project they started in week 5. They will learn finishing techniques applicable to their garment and pressing for a professional looking finished project.
Materials Included: All necessary tools and materials.
Instructor: Koalani Walkoe is a professional costume and fashion designer who also enjoys teaching sewing to others. She started sewing at a very young age and attended FIDM to study Fashion and Costume Design. After working for 7 years in the fashion industry she transitioned to teaching introductory sewing classes to groups and private classes to individuals.
Location: All classes take place UPSTAIRS in our CREATIVE SPACE unless otherwise noted. Use the exterior stairs on the side of the building to enter.
Note: LATE ARRIVALS NOT ADMITTED ONCE CLASS HAS BEGUN
