Wed 4/29 Female Fiber Artist Series - DECONSTRUCTED FASHION 6pm

$30.00

Wednesday - April 29 - 6:00-8:00pm

Ages: 14+

Description: This class will cover acclaimed Japanese  fashion designer Rei Kawakubo, founder of the Comme de Garcons brand. There will be an overview and short history of Kawakubo and her design philosophy for Comme de Garcons, focusing on it's deconstructionist, anti-fashion, and androgynous elements. Students will sew a simple pouch bag with irregular shape, visible seams, and neutral colors inspired by Kawakubo's style.

Featured Artist: Rei Kawakubo, doesn’t feel that gender has influenced her clothing. Even the name Comme des Garçons is a reaction against the feminine — the statement, translating to “like the boys,” implies a jettisoning of traditional signifiers of femininity. And yet there is often an intrinsic connection between Kawakubo’s work and the feminine — even in the act of abstaining from it.

Materials Included: All necessary tools and materials

Instructor: Koalani Walkoe is a professional costume and fashion designer who also enjoys teaching sewing to others. She started sewing at a very young age and attended FIDM to study Fashion and Costume Design. After working for 7 years in the fashion industry she transitioned to teaching introductory sewing classes to groups and private classes to individuals.arment sewing is mindful, sustainable, and inclusive of all sized bodies.

Location: All classes take place UPSTAIRS in our CREATIVE SPACE unless otherwise noted. Use the exterior stairs on the side of the building to enter.

Many thanks to the Pasadena Arts & Culture Commission and the City of Pasadena Cultural Affairs Division for making our this series possible!
