Wed 2/4-3/11, 6-week Printmaking Course 6pm

$180.00

Wednesdays - February 4-March 11 - 6:00-8:00pm

Ages: 12+

Prerequisites: None

Description: This six-week printmaking intensive invites participants to explore a wide range of printmaking techniques through playful experimentation, creative problem-solving, and hands-on discovery. Designed for beginners and curious creatives alike, the series emphasizes process over perfection and encourages exploration and surprise. While some of these techniques are also offered as standalone workshops at Remainders, this intensive introduces new approaches, materials, and conceptual frameworks, ensuring that even returning participants will experience something fresh. Using accessible, often upcycled materials, each session builds skills while leaving plenty of room for curiosity, creative freedom, and fun.

Week 1: Collagraph - By experimenting with duct tape, masking tape, metal tape, and other adhesive materials, students will explore how texture, line, and relief affect printed images. This approach offers a new take on collagraph for those who may have tried it before, focusing on surface variation and mark-making rather than traditional assemblage.

Week 2: Cyanotype Collage - Explore the cyanotype process by printing collaged images using light-sensitive chemistry and UV exposure. Working with photographs, objects, handwriting, and other collage elements, students will learn how light, transparency, and exposure time shape the final print. The session balances technical instruction with experimentation, resulting in striking blue and white prints that feel both scientific and magical.

Week 3: Mono-printing - This session focuses on additive and reductive techniques as a way to explore negative space and intentional mark-making. Participants will add and remove ink to build images through layering, wiping, and subtraction, discovering how absence can be just as powerful as presence. The emphasis is on process, experimentation, and embracing the uniqueness of each pull.

Week 4: Screen Printing - Learn the fundamentals of screen printing using handmade screens constructed from upcycled fabric and embroidery hoops. This session introduces stencil-based printing and repeating imagery, while keeping the process approachable and tactile. The focus is on experimentation rather than precision, making screen printing accessible, flexible, and fun.

Week 5: Linocut - Participants will be introduced to linocut relief printing with a focus on subtraction—carving away layers of material to print a multi-colored image, all using the same block. Emphasis will be placed on planning, color choices, and how each carved decision permanently alters the block. This session invites you to slow down, work deliberately, and discover how bold, expressive prints can emerge from simple tools.

Week 6: Intaglio - This final session explores intaglio printing using upcycled containers as printing plates. Participants will incise, scratch, and texture the surface to create lines that hold ink, producing prints with rich detail and depth. This accessible approach introduces intaglio concepts without specialized equipment, offering a satisfying and experimental conclusion to the series.
